There are two types of people in the world: those who cook and those who do not. With COVID-19 distancing us from our favorite eateries, the former retreats to the kitchen, confident and determined, while the latter (myself included) scratches their head contemplating what takeaway meal will travel best. That curiosity aside, sometimes it is simply a craving that compels us to call and place the order.
Hunger hit me with its all too familiar hammer; heat, crunch, grip — all these descriptors revolved around my head like cartoon canaries. My mind was set on the Hot Tiger Bun chicken sandwich from Lucky Buns. But what's a meal without wine? And what cries more for Riesling than spice? These rhetorics reminded me of the 2015 New York State Cuvee Riesling by Liten Buffel that I had, by chance, put in my refrigerator earlier that day; the stars were aligning.
The order was placed, the bottle was opened, and all that was left to do was Instagram (and eat, of course). The Riesling poured a brilliant golden yellow that seemed to accent the edges of the sesame seed bun. On the nose, semi-sweet aromatics of orchard fruit and honeysuckle encouraged refuge from the Sichuan pepper. Upon tasting, the apple-orange aroma transformed into a comfortable acidity that cut through the heat and left behind a balanced, round mouthfeel, completed with a dry finish. Satisfaction.
