by the Jerry Garcia of the Northern Rhone

Story: Petit Ours is a négociant wine made from biodynamically farmed fruit from a friend of Matthieu Barret named Remi Pouizin. The grapes are brought in and de-stemmed and see a two-week maceration in concrete tanks before resting in concrete eggs for nine months. This is a fun, quick dive into the versatility of a fantastic grape. This wine shows off a more lighthearted side of Syrah, while still delivering the stuffing and backbone that it can be known for.

THE DETAILS:
  • Matthieu was born in Aix-en-Provence and took every opportunity to learn about viticulture from an early age. He discovered organics and developed a deep interest in living ecosystems and how they work amongst each other.
  • He works 11 hectares in Cornas including its northernmost enclave, the Vallée du Coulet, which is known for its steep sites as well as its exposure to Le Mistral, a famous, powerful wind capable of preventing spring frost and potentially destroying a vineyard.
