Strawberry Mullet XL 2019. It was the first vintage rosé was held back in barrel intentionally for extended aging (XL= Extra Lees) to further round out the palate of an otherwise moody vintage in 2019.
Just bottled in late January, the conception of XL was a direct result of years of being a buyer and not having a large pool of rosé wines available to choose from at a time of the year when your menus were one foot in winter and one in spring.
For me, a good savory rosé isn’t just for the carefree summer grilling months, but rather, they’re a lock with the menus being written in late winter/early spring when you’ve still got fennel and beets out your ass but things like asparagus and favas are knocking on the door. So why the hell not hold a little back and let the people have what’s good for them?
