Summer Juice’s Rosa, a lightly macerated Pinot Gris from Clarksburg, is made by Dan Schaaf and Kayne Gudowski of Napa-based Deux Punx. Despite their name, when it comes to winemaking they are rule followers, even if their style is based off intuition. I personally refuse to call this wine a rosé, and I’m sure that there are people who will disagree with me, but simply put, this is skin-contact white wine. The Pinot Gris is picked and crushed, then left on the skins for roughly 24 hours to give just enough color to convince. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel before being racked into neutral oak for an 8 month nap. A small amount of SO2 is used at crush to prevent oxidation on the wine, but that was the only addition made at any time.
Coming in at a little over 10% alcohol, this is definitely one for the warmer weather. It’s soft, understated stone fruit combines with just a hint of brett to please the natty and the natural drinker. (Yes, there is a difference.)
