I can’t say there’s much that I appreciate more than a producer who walks the walk as much as they talk the talk. Le Clos des Grives has been certified organic since 1968, making them the first Jura producer to obtain such certification. The domaine proper was founded in 1962 by Gaston Charbonnier, a pioneer of organic viticulture who actualized his vision of meticulously managed yet chemical-free farming.

The 2018 ‘À Bec’ is an anomaly in the world of Clos des Grives, where reds have normally been blended together and white wines receive the single varietal treatment. This represents a bit of a shift since the passage of ownership; Mulin feels that all of the varieties grown can be shown by themselves without the need to make them a collective. Personally, I think he’s right. The Pinot here shows such liveliness, energy, and tension that for a moment you forget it comes from a place that makes some of the world’s most coveted white wines. There’s a noted softness to the wine as well, and while the fruit is very vibrant, it cannot be stated enough how much restraint and elegance play a major role in this bottle. There are simply no rough edges here, and I think that this is the perfect time and place for a wine like this.
