In a field dominated by men, Berta has been making mezcal since she was a little girl and at 59 years old now is one of the best. She makes mezcal in the town of San Baltazar Chichicapam (the Central Valley) and started producing mezcal to sell after her husband suddenly passed away. Berta is one of the most famous mezcalaras yet is making just 100-200 liters of mezcal a month.
Espadin is one of the most commonly used agave. Here, it was crushed by stone tahona, fermented in wood, and double distilled in copper. This bottling smells like fresh cut wheat grass with a steely finish. Forget the over-smoked nightmares of mezcals past...this Espadin is a perfect introduction to Rezpiral and small batch agave spirits.
