profound glou glou from an unexpected source

Story: Intellego Wines is the passion project of Jurgen Gouws, a young man playing a large part in an impressive new wave of natural winemakers in South Africa. This Pinotage comes from twenty-year-old bush-trained vines planted to decomposed granite in the Swartland. The juice is fermented in a semi-carbonic way using whole clusters for eight days, allowing for less tannin extraction. It spends five months in used 225L barrique then settles for four weeks in stainless steel before bottling. The wine is full yet not too weighty on the palate. A bit more spice comes through, but is measured each step of the way by ample fruit.

THE DETAILS:

  • Like many of his generation, Jurgen does not own any land, instead working with local farmers to cultivate prosperous soils while expressing grapes best suited to the Mediterranean climate.
  • Halagasha is a term used by the Xhosa tribe of the Eastern Cape to celebrate a goal in soccer. And it feels very fitting: a spontaneous eruption of joy is a fantastic way to describe this wine.
  • Pinotage is crossed between Pinot Noir & Cinsault, and while it's usually not known for its nuance or profundity, this one was mistook for Cru Beaujolais during a staff blind tasting!
