I was in Barcelona a few years back visiting with some old travel friends when one of them, who was living in El Born, decided to take us on a little trip through some of her favorite spots in the city. We were in what seemed like a maze of alleys until we happened upon the front door of the Old Fashioned Gin Tonic & Cocktail Bar. Personally, I'm a pretty fervent bar-seater when it comes down to it, but with a group our size we were relegated to the red leather bench opposite the bar. I started scanning the cocktail list, avoiding the extensive gin & tonic list (I was wrong, I know) when the bartender somehow caught me.
From there began his undying commitment to convince me that I had never experienced the true splendor of this beverage. He explained that this gin, from the Canary Islands, was distilled from grapes and came from the place where mayonnaise was actually created. He served me the spirit on its own at first, and the burst of Mediterranean botanicals and savory elements, with a body and smoothness I had never experienced in gin, instantly convinced me. Putting it into a cocktail pushed me fully over the edge. I was now a gin & tonic convert (and have remained since).
