The 38 hectares that compose Domaine Sérol have been a poly cultural farm passed down through the generations since the 17th century, though the winery itself became a commercial venture when Stéphane took over from his father in 1996. Nestled in the foothills of the Massif Central, he turned his focus to more local varieties, with a healthy amount of attention paid to Gamay Saint-Romain.

The Éclat de Granite is a study of this clone on granite from different sites, exposures, and elevations showcasing the more brooding side of the variety. Fermentation and then further aging for 10 months in cement tank highlights the concentration and grit that this wine has to offer. This is a textbook example of a grape variety taking to a soil type to become its best self. It’s a lightbulb wine for identifying mineral qualities or even earthiness as a tasting marker, as well as a reinforcement to trust what you smell and taste. Don’t confuse simplicity for inelegance here, this wine excels at being Gamay that presents red fruit and iron with more character and an emphasis on not letting the perfect get in the way of the great.
