Story: Like many good ideas, Konpira Maru was born between two friends in a pub. Al and Sam both have a background working in the retail, production, and education sectors of the wine industry, so striking out on their own was the natural next step for them to take. 2014 was their first vintage, which resulted in a tiny production using fruit from trusted farmers in Queensland and Victoria who shared the belief that the rest of the world was not truly experiencing the variety available in Australian wine. Their Mt. Midoriyama pet nats are hilariously inspired by Ninja Warrior. A traditional blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier may feel a bit familiar, but these gentlemen are aware they’re not making Champagne, rather simply guiding us toward the idea that crafting wine with care will give you a tangible reward.

THE DETAILS: 

  • In a slight show of decadence, a portion of this wine is fermented in new Hungarian oak (omg is this even natty?), while the rest is done in open top stainless steel. Fermentation lasts for seven weeks before bottling, and, as is the case with Methode Ancestrale wines, it’s then bottled with 15 grams of residual sugar to give the raw ingredients for a delightful mousse.
  • More than anything, this reminds us of a softer version of Italian Franciacorta with its soft yet bright red fruit, white flower blossoms, and firm acidity
