Annamária Réka Koncz is a young winemaker in Barabás, along the Ukrainian border in northeastern Hungary. She works about 3 hectares of vineyard. Most vines have 40 - 60-years and are of the Királyleányka variety, together with some Rhine Riesling, Furmint and Hárslevelű. Her vines sit on the southern slope of the Tipet “mountain”, a large volcanic hill of about 220 meters, part of the Kaszony-Bégányi hills. The formations are estimated to be 10-17 million years old. The Tipet is made up of 3 main volcanic soils, vitreous rhyolite lava, to a lesser extent volcanic ashy lava, which formed into perlite when cooled down, and, form the latest eruption, plagioclase rhyolite (tectosilicates or framework silicate minerals). The plateau surface is primarily loess.

She earned her BSc in Horticulture Engineering writing her thesis on hybrid grape varietals. At the University of Copenhagen, she received her Masters in Agriculture, and it was during her time in Copenhagen that she learned of natural wine. She traveled in Slovenia, France, and Italy further influencing this new found passion.
