Stergios Papras is the winemaker for Papras Bio Wines in Tyrnavos, Greece. Located between Mount Olympus and Pindos Mountains, the region is known for sparkling wines and aromatic whites. The coastal plain was used for grain production in ancient times, but now the economic driver in the region is viticulture. Papras has 4.5 ha under vine and has been certified organic since 1990.
This wine is 100% Roditis, a widely planted grape in Greece that is similar to Pinot Gris, with a pinkish hue to the skins. The grapes spend 25 days on the skins in stainless steel and finish elevage in used barrels. Vitalii describes it as a restrained interpretation of the grape, with a fruit profile of dried apples, apricots, and beeswax. A great introduction to the realm of skin contact whites with enough color in the glass to understand 'orange wine,' but with gentle acidity to let you warm up to the category.
