Of all our mountainous vineyards, Red Tail is strikingly rugged and loathing in its steepness. The vineyard sits above the immense Demonstration Forest with a southeastern exposure. The soils are marine shales and mudstone but have high levels of iron oxide and are bright red in color. Large granitic stones are scattered among the vines. Red Tail Vineyard, nears the Santa Cruz Mountain summit at 2100 ft of elevation. It lies far above the foggy coastline and the vineyard has no problem ripening Syrah in the heat of the summer months. We believe the wines from Red Tail are profound, unique and deserving of a single vineyard bottling.
