The moment I first tasted this wine (August 30th), I immediately knew it was going to be my wine of the year. It's just brilliant.
Martin's father, Eric, makes one of my favorite wines in the entire world from these same 70+ year-old vines of Serine -- an ancient clone of Syrah -- in Saint-Julien-en-Saint-Alban. Eric's is brooding and chiseled, concentrated yet fragrant. It requires some patience and maybe some meat.
Martin's take is different. Beneath the surface is the Serine's firm fingerprint, a la Eric. But Martin has remixed it into something fun and very full of energy. It smells like forest blackberries and mint and the palate is just so damn pure. It reminds me of when my kids find some paper I've written on for work and then color all over it with crayons, creating perfect madness out of my order.
100% Serine from from granitic soils, partially destemmed and fermented in concrete tank, elevage for 15 months in old demi muid.
