Golden nectar from Virginia.
Lightwell Survey’s “Hintermen '' is a white blend with the face of a Sauternes and the body of a Pfalz Riesling. This blend of 59% Petit Manseng and 41% Vidal Blanc was cofermented in large neutral oak puncheons for 16 months prior to undergoing malolactic fermentation. The Petit Manseng was sourced from the Shenandoah Valley and the Vidal blanc was sourced from Sherman Ridge.
- The folks at Lightwell Survey aim to showcase the distinctive Virginia terroir and aim for the bullseye but prefer to land slightly off center.
- The team consists of Sebastian Zutant, Ben Jordan, Jay Zutant, Julian Caustrita and John DeNapoli.
- They chose to work with these hybrid varietals as access to Riesling diminishes.
- Petit Manseng is typically grown in Southwestern France, yet Virginia is known for producing some of the best expressions of this grape.
