The “Steinterrassen” bottlings are something like the premier cru wines, sourced from older vines in the terraced vineyards and bottled according to soil type, both sandstone (“sandstein” in German) and limestone (“muschelkalk” in German). If the sandstone bottling is finessed and expressive, the limestone bottling is a dense fortress-like Sylvaner. Vetter’s 2016 “Steinterrassen Muschelkalk” is shockingly deep, a really intense palate: forceful, dense, structured. The core of the wine seems to be little more than rocks, chalk and wet-stone notes, a quinine-like herbal quality with quince and dark, blue-purple notes that are cooling and feel somehow essential… of the earth.
