If you look closely in the lush woods of Virginia, you'll see tangled grapevines weaving through the trees, doing what they do best: climbing. It's this imagery and the Jordan brothers' deep belief in hybrids and co-ferments that led us to name our collaboration Tangled Fruit. A blend of hybrid grapes, pears, and crab apples from their family farm and other small growers pushing the boundaries in Virginia. It's a low abv, playful wine that lands somewhere between a fleshy, sharp Muscadet and tropical cider.
(label designed by Rebekah Pineda.)
70% Vidal Blanc, 12% Noiret, and 10% crab apples (Petit Manchurian and a seedling that we're calling Ruby), plus about 8% of a melange of apples and pears from Mt. Airy (Midland) that macerated in the direct pressed grapes. Nothing was added except for 25ppm SO2 at bottling. No fining or filtration, it saw full malo. A final note that the apples and pears were from our vineyard in Mt. Airy but the other fruit was purchased, as we had teeny yields due to frost and mildew. 2020 was a tough year for our vineyard.
