the bright side of Nebbiolo
Story: This 100% Chiavennasca comes from the terraced slopes of San Giacomo di Teglio, in Valtellina in Northern Italy, overlooking the serpentine Adda River that runs east to west through the region, into Lake Como to the West. (It’s only a 15 minute drive up the road to the Swiss border.) High altitudes and steep vineyards impart a fresh, delicate litheness to wines grown here. Experiment with a decant!
THE DETAILS:
- Run by Angelo Sega and his two sons, Luca & Matteo, Barbacan specializes in Chiavennasca, the local name for Nebbiolo.
- All work in the vineyard is done by hand. (Machinery is next to impossible, based on how steep and winding the vineyards are.)
-
The producers say it best: “"In the vineyard we observe what nature communicates: the melting of the snow in the mountains, the ripe hay in the meadows of the valley floor, the spring of water that emerges from the rock. Each message is for us a precious source that leads us to act according to what those who preceded us taught us. In our wine we express the vintages with their oddities and their balances, always different and always unpredictable. Every season we repeat ancient gestures, carrying on the identity of an Alpine people that has always been linked to the cultivation of Chiavennasca.
