La Quintinye Vermouth Royal is named for Jean-Baptiste De La Quintinye, born in the Charente region in 1624, and botanist to King Louis XIV, who commissioned him to create the Kitchen Gardens at the Palace of Versailles. This Vermouth, also derived from the soils of Charente, continues Jean-Baptiste's spirit of excellence and innovation.
Created first as a medicinal product, Vermouth first appeared in Italy in the mid-16th Century, around the same time Pineau des Charentes was accidentally created in France, born from a chance mix of grape must and cognac eau-de-vie. 450 years later, La Quintinye oenologist and distiller Jean-Sebastien Robicquet combines the two, for his wholly unique Vermouth Royal. Robicquet's vermouth is the exclusive release with such a recipe, the only vermouth in the world that incorporates Pineau des Charentes. 37 plants and spices lend their aromatics, 12 of which appear in all of La Quintinye's three expressions: Red, White, and Extra Dry.
Robicquet's bottlings feature no caramel coloring, instead deriving their color from their original Pineau des Charentes components. La Quintinye's White and Extra Dry releases are crafted from a blend of white wine and white Pineau des Charentes, while their Red is blended with red Pineau des Charentes. Using the mistelle in production provides a signature roundness and intensity, which perfectly balances the bitterness of the Vermouth Royal's botanicals.
