In the life of a small business (and life in general), there always seems to be that thing on the list that never gets checked off. Summer turns to winter, the website is down, the cooling system needs repairs. For us, that small thing was a custom designed, seemingly unimportant 22 oz. MoFlo water bottle.
Sam Jayne, our now basically famous designer, made us a pre-opening list of merch. It had all been produced and sold by now -- except for the water bottle (aka bidon). It became almost like a distant, beloved relative, often used in shop conversation but never seen. And this week, our thing finally became real.
The shop's name and ethos stem from the French cycling term meaning servant (a domestique) and the need for bike merch has always felt oddly important. The bidon, until just now, was this mythical stand in for the beauty of design, the importance of value, and the genius of utility. It's not merch, it's one of our favorite things, and we love finally seeing it out in the wild.
