Grape Varieties: 58% Albariño, 42% Petit Manseng

This is the next wine on our long-lees-aging-white-wine journey that we embarked on with the 2022 Teacher’s Pet(it) Manseng. Like that wine, The Illuminaqua fermented for well over a year, just under 20 months, resulting in a wine that consorted with multiple yeast populations. The effect is density of the texture, deep and layered flavors, and a roundness that succeeds in robing the acidity; at least at first. With this vintage we answered the question of what happens when you combine two thick skinned, high acid grape varieties that seem to thrive in a climate influenced by the Atlantic ocean. They both bring intensity of flavor and structure on their own, and when brought together, well, as you might expect, this wine is intense.

Vineyard Sourcing: The Albariño grapes were sourced from a vineyard located near Keswick in on Manteo/Nason, Tatum soils. The Petit Manseng grapes were sourced from a vineyard in Batesville in central Virginia with Hayesville clay loam soils.

How We Made It: The grapes were direct pressed and then combined to ferment together spontaneously in old, French oak, 228L barrels. The yeast fermentation lasted just under 20 months, during which time the wine finished malolactic. There were no additions until a small dose of sulfur dioxide was added at the unfiltered bottling in March 2025.
