For centuries, the Funaro family has farmed two hillsides of olives and grapes 2 hours south of Palermo, Sicily (and also right near the ancient hilltop village of Corleone, as seen in "The Godfather"). Three siblings oversee all aspects of farming and production on the property which is split between two holdings, one in Santa Ninfa, and the other 10 minutes away in nearby Salemi. Grillo is the dominant white grape here and Nero d’Avola the most broadly planted red variety, but there is also Insolia, Catarratto, Perricone, Syrah, and a small amount of surprisingly delicious Chardonnay. Everything is certified organic, and vinified very simply -- the resulting wines are pure, varietally correct, and extremely consistent/reliable.

Soil: Marl rich in organic substances and rock fragments known as “Cuti”.

Vinification: Fermentation and aging on lees in stainless steel.

Notes: Dense but restrained citrus and quince fruit sitting on a firmly saline and mineral palate. An ideal companion to Mediterranean cuisine.
