Okay…ready for a game? Take everything you think you know about Bordeaux Blends in Virginia. What comes to mind? Big! Bold! Kick you in the teeth with tannins! Okay, now forget all of that. Enter: Obscura. If you’ve ever toyed around with a camera obscura (if you haven’t, you should, they’re fun), you know it’s all about flipping an image on its head, reversed and inverted. Our goal was to mimic the phenomenon of a camera obscura and flip the traditional winemaking style of Bordeaux Blends in VA on their head. Winemaker/Production Manager, Zach, spearheaded this project. He has been romanticizing the wines from where he hails around the Willamette Valley ever since moving to the east coast, so don’t be alarmed when you open this bOrDeAuX bLeNd and it’s…soft? Delicate? Dare we say…sensual? It’s designed to be light-hearted and not take itself too seriously, just like us.
27% Cabernet Franc, 27% Sauvignon Blanc, 26% Merlot, 17% Petit Verdot, 3% Tannat
How We Made It: To achieve the silky smoothness of Obscura, Zach thought it wise to create two separate fermentations, to allow each varietal to co-mingle and become friendly with one another. The first was Sauvignon Blanc, direct pressed, snuggling with whole berry Merlot. The second was whole berry Cabernet Franc as well as whole berry Petit Verdot, a touch of which was whole cluster for some fun carbonic-y liveliness. When done with their gestation, the two wines were blended and, in true Bordeaux fashion, aged in neutral oak barrels for around 9 months, when the winemaker said it was time to deliver. Please welcome to the world: Obscura.
