Simon Busser grows his grapes in a bend of the Lot River, 20 minutes from Cahors. It’s a warm and sunny and flat place, which one would think would be an easy (and kind of boring) place to grow wine. But boring it’s not! In Simon’s little micro-climate in the crook of the river, nights stay cool, and he lucked out with some well-draining soil.

Simon trained with Olivier Cousin in the Loire, so he does things pretty old school, like working his vineyard by horse. It’s easy to write off wines from this area as big and full-bodied bruisers, but I’m immediately struck by the litheness and finesse of Simon's wines, while still retaining enough heft to give it a sense of place.
