In the heart of Priorat, the steep, schist-laden slopes of Porrera are home to Familia Nin-Ortiz, a biodynamic project founded by Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz. Working on terraces and natural inclines across Finca Les Planetes and Mas d’En Caçador, they focus on preserving ancient Garnatxa (Garnacha) and Carinyena (Carignan) vines, employing hand-harvesting, indigenous yeasts, and careful, low-intervention vinification. Their approach emphasizes the purity of site and terroir, reflecting the unique llicorella soils, Mediterranean breezes, and high-altitude conditions of Priorat.
The 2019 Planetes de Nin Garnatxes en Àmfora is their youngest red, made from Garnacha grapes grown biodynamically on Finca Les Planetes’ four hectares of north-facing terraces. Destemmed but uncrushed, the fruit fermented naturally in vat before maturing for seven months in 700- and 1,000-liter terracotta amphorae. The wine is fruit-forward yet precise, with floral aromas, ripe berries, a touch of earthiness, and refreshing acidity despite the warm vintage. Minimal sulfur was added at bottling, and the result is an elegant, approachable Garnacha that captures the essence of Priorat’s slate soils and the care taken in the vineyard.
With only 3,225 bottles produced, this amphora-aged Garnacha exemplifies Familia Nin-Ortiz’s philosophy: balancing tradition and experimentation while showcasing the power, freshness, and minerality of the Priorat terroir. Read more here.
