I first tasted with Angela Weidner and Maxime Aerts at the natural wine fairs in France in 2020, just a couple of years after they launched Terres du Gaugalin. Their tiny, organically farmed estate sits in the wooded hills of the Gard on the right bank of the Rhône, where they work just three hectares of rugged, labor-intensive vineyards planted in the 1970s. Everything is farmed organically, made without additives, and with a light touch in the cellar.
This wine is a great reminder of what Carignan can be when it's treated with care. The grape has a reputation for being rustic — high in tannins and acidity — and for decades in the Languedoc it was often made with whole-cluster carbonic maceration simply to soften its rough edges. Low grape prices also meant many wineries lacked the resources for modern equipment or expensive élevage, reinforcing that easy-drinking style.
Angela and Maxime take a different approach. Their wine is bright, fresh, and incredibly drinkable served with a slight chill, but it also has more depth and texture than the typical "chilled red." It's energetic without feeling simple — a bottle that delivers freshness while still giving you something to think about after each sip.
