Kumusha is the project of Tinashe Nyamudoka, a Zimbabwean immigrant whose journey in wine began working in restaurants and rising steadily from server to sommelier. His story — both personal and professional — is captured in the documentary Blind Ambition. Now an established figure in the South African wine world and based in Johannesburg, Nyamudoka collaborates with winemaker and friend Attie Louw of Opstal Estate to produce wines that are expressive, lower in alcohol, and made with minimal intervention.
The wines are harvested and vinified at Opstal in the Breedekloof Wine Valley, where about 75% of Kumusha’s fruit is grown. The region is marked by a dramatic geological fault line and a mix of sandstone and granite soils, both of which shape the structure and energy of the wines.
This particular bottling features Carignan — an outlier in South Africa, where Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah dominate red plantings. The grapes are picked early, with 15% whole bunch for a semi-carbonic lift and gentle extraction throughout.
The result is a vivid, cranberry-hued wine with bright acidity and herbal undertones. Serve chilled.
