THE NEW WINE LEXICON COMES TO LIFE

One of the first things you learn when you start getting into wine is that wine has *so* many words. And they're often the source of wine's outsized intimidation factor.

So, we thought it would be fun to put together a new wine lexicon. The goal here isn't to replace the serious reference books of wine, many of which are very serious and very good (shoutout to The Oxford Companion to Wine, which is indispensable). It's to supplement them with something a little fresher, a little more whimsical, and a little less dogmatic.

We constructed a lexicon & situational decision matrix based on some of the terms below. We had fun vicariously living through these bottles, imagining an alive yacht wine, or a wild bottle that you drink while eating kabobs... Roll the dice to see what you get! (Plus there's a built-in discount for letting us pick for you.)

THE LEXICON:

Punchy, adjective - The actual Oxford definition of “having an immediate impact, forceful” applies here. Can also refer to a red, coferment or orange wine that tastes like actual punch.

Alive, adjective - Often used in conjunction with dangerous. Also applied to 0/0 wines with aromatics/fruit that are evolving in the glass moment to moment, but doesn’t necessarily suggest imminent mouse.

Wild, adjective - Sometimes used as a euphemism for volatile acidity (VA), Brett, reduction, or mouse (gotta trust your source), but can also be used to mean a 0/0 or low sulfur wine with an unbridled quality.

Lifted, adjective - Can refer to the mouthfeel, extraction, acidity or fruit of a red or white wine. More of a vibe, something that doesn’t weigh you down spiritually or otherwise.

Kabob wine, noun - Mediterranean red wine with some extract and tannin but not jammy, ideally with some brett, and inexpensive so “family pours” aka guzzling 12 oz glasses is no big deal.

Patio pounder, porch pounder, noun - A wine that is affordable, maybe slightly larger format (1L, anyone?) and slightly lower alcohol that one can “pound” outside on a patio or porch. See also picnic wine.

Picnic wine, noun - A close cousin of the patio/porch pounder, with a little less edge. Doesn’t necessarily need to be as “poundable,” and can feature more pretty, elegant qualities.

Yacht wine, noun - A status-driven, expensive version of the above. Picnic wine for the 1%.
