Hailing from a 3 acre parcel of vines on the schistous soils at his Lost Hills Ranch property in the Yorkville Highlands AVA, we owe the plantings for this previously wine-club only wine to Sam Bilbro at Idlewild Wines. You can consider this wine somewhat of a ‘familial blend.’ Riesling was crossed with Schiava in 1929 and the resultant white grape was called “Kerner.” 2022 was the first vintage with measurable yields in all three varieties. With Obed, we’re paying homage to this patch of earth, these wonderful varieties with which I’m obsessed, this site’s past and my own grafting in to the Bilbro family via bestie Sam. Riesling (both direct pressed and skin contact), Kerner and Schiava (direct press) are blended to showcase all these relations. Effusive and textural, just like I like ‘em, it’s classic Lost Hills riesling with a distinct cherry pit aroma. The Trolli Peachi-O’s is hallmark Kerner, and the nervy backbone and super subtle smokiness is your Schiava.
