Tannat Blend 'Grandassa' 2024

Even before we understood the great simpático between the climates of Virginia and Southwest France, we always had a quirky affection for the Fer Servadou variety. Also called Braucol (“the bull”), Fer often expresses itself in brambly, rustic, berry notes, along with a generous shake of both salt and pepper. In France, and now also in this wine, it is often enjoined with Tannat, which focuses it and provides a grounding structure.

The wine takes its name from the Grandassa Models, a pioneering group of Black women who promoted natural beauty and African-inspired fashion, and were at the center of the "Black is Beautiful" movement in the 1960s. They challenged beauty standards by celebrating diverse body types and skin tones. The Grandassa label artwork is of bird flight, and in this way is an expression of transcendent beauty and freedom in the natural world.

Grape Varieties: 65% Tannat, 32% Fer Servadou, 3% Other Varieties

Vineyard Sourcing: These grapes were sourced from Hillsborough vineyard in northern Virginia.

How We Made It: Both the Tannat and Fer Servadou were picked on 9/16/24 and spontaneously fermented separately.

The Tannat was 50% destemmed berries on top of 50% whole clusters and then pressed at dryness after 23 days on the skins. It was then put into four, fourth use and two, eighth use French oak barrels. The Fer Servadou was fully destemmed and pressed at dryness after 15 days on the skins. It was put into two, fourth use French oak barrels.

The two wine lots were blended in August 2025 and aged in fourth use French oak until the wine was bottled unfiltered with no additions on February 10th, 2026.
