Grapes: Co-fermentation of Gamay & Chardonnay
This is “take me to Freaky Town” rosé — a glimpse into what non-traditional co-ferments and red/white blends can achieve.
It’s a playful mix of direct-press Gamay combined with a short maceration of whole-cluster Chardonnay. Yes, they flipped the script—making red wine like white, white like red, and then combining them!
Clos Bateau was founded in 2019 by Sylvie De Visser and Thierry Klok in Lantignié, northern Beaujolais. After leaving careers as restaurateurs in Amsterdam, they followed their passion for natural wine.
These wines are a blend of creativity and a strong sense of place. The estate is deeply committed to terroir, rehabilitating old, abandoned vines and carefully cultivating them despite low yields to produce high-quality grapes.
On the palate, this rosé is like a strawberry daiquiri with an herbal finish, a touch of structure, and a cloudy glow in the glass. The label pretty much says it all.
