Melon de Bourgogne 'A Tatons' 2022

$30.00

VINTAGE: 2022
GRAPE VARIETY: Melon (100%)
LOCATION: Saint-Fiacre-sur-Maine, Muscadet, Loire

TECHNICAL: 100% Melon de Bourgogne grapes, grown on vines planted in the 1950s in Maisdon-sur-Sèvre on Gneiss and Orthogneiss soils. The wine undergoes a slow and gentle pressing for around fifteen hours on a vertical hydraulic press, followed by spontaneous fermentation and six months of aging on lees in fiber vats. This wine, with its golden hue and long finish, offers more complexity than a typical Melon, featuring lots of melon fruit and a nice texture. It shows well after being open for 30+ minutes and is even better on the second day.

A DOMESTIQUE DIRECT IMPORT: In February, I went to the fairs in the Loire Valley with the hopes of finding wines for wine club. I met Pierre Goiset and am thrilled to introduce these wines to the US market. Goiset is cultivating 3.5 hectares in the Nantais vineyards, nestled between the Sèvre and Maine rivers. After a decade in Saint-Étienne, he returned to his native Nantes in 2020, settling in the heart of Muscadet in Saint-Fiacre-sur-Maine. Pierre employs organic and biodynamic practices, using herbal teas, horse-driven vineyard work, and an old vertical wooden press. His wines are crafted with native yeasts, manual harvesting, and minimal sulfites, resulting in unfiltered and authentic expressions of the terroir. The estate features old mass selections of Melon from the 1920s-1960s and young Merlot vines, all growing on a variety of soils including gneiss, orthogneiss, and granite.

The wines all feature a body and texture that is rare for this region -- in addition to the A Tatons in wine club, we also now have available his skin contact Melon (!), a smoky, Rhône inspired Merlot, and a Melon made with older vines that would be a fascinating side by side with the A Tatons.
