Keegan Mayo, born in Hawaii and raised in Santa Cruz, graduated with a degree in Oenology from UC Davis in 2008. He has worked primarily in the Santa Cruz region, managing larger-scale wine production, starting with nine years at Testarossa and most recently serving as lead winemaker at Bargetto Winery, founded in 1890 by immigrants from Castelnuovo Don Bosco in Piedmont. Keegan also runs his own project on the side (this bottling), focusing exclusively on Santa Cruz vineyards.
While Pinot Noir and Chardonnay dominate the region, there is a growing interest in Italian varieties as people explore both heritage and the opportunities presented by a changing climate. Keegan sources some of his fruit from Regan Vineyards, where he works during the day. This 50-acre property, with 36.5 acres under vine and views of Monterey Bay, was the first in Santa Cruz to plant Pinot Gris. Of the vineyard’s acreage, just 2.5 acres are dedicated to Pinot Gris.
This wine reflects the lush ripeness typical of Santa Cruz’s long growing season, with a saline undertone. The Pinot Gris is pale pink or salmon in color and with a fruit profile of lush summer peaches. The acidity combined with fruit conjures the idea of nectarine jolly ranchers rolling around in the mouth.
