Florez Wines was founded in 2017 by James Jelks, a Santa Cruz native who graduated from UC Davis in Oenology. After working in winemaking around the globe, he returned home to focus on local vineyards. James shares a winery space with Meagan Bell of Margins, and his wines range from serious Syrah to playful co-ferments. Despite the diversity, there’s a common thread of florality and lightness, favoring aromatics over power.
I recently brought this bottle to Wu's Wonton King and did a blind comparison with my dinner companions, pitting it against the Château de Tours (Rayas) that James claims as his inspiration. While the two wines were radically different, the Florez was by far the favorite of the night. This wine is 100% Grenache, sourced from two parcels just outside the Santa Cruz AVA. It’s fermented half whole cluster (semi-carbonic style) and aged for 10 months in neutral barrels. The result is fresh, floral, with notes of raspberry and cherry cobbler poured over wet stones. Zero sulfur.
