Since 1937, four generations of the Ramilo family have made wine at Quinta do Casal do Ramilo, a 20-hectare estate tucked between Sintra and Mafra. The vineyards sit in a south-facing valley shaped by the Atlantic, with humid mornings and nights and warm afternoons, creating a unique microclimate. Rocky soils and the influence of the nearby sea give these wines a freshness and balance that are distinctive to the region.
In 2019, the family began a new chapter focused on the tiny and historic DOC of Colares, home to rare pre-phylloxera vines growing in the sandy hills of Sintra. This Malvasia de Colares is a unique orange wine, made from hand-harvested grapes fermented on the skins and aged for 18 months in French oak. Aromatic, structured, fresh, and saline, it’s a beautiful expression of this little corner of Portugal.
