We sadly lost pioneer vigneron, Steve Rhodes, in 2015 but the legacy of his vineyard lives on through the wines. Due to lower yields in the 2022 vintage we blended the grapes from the two great vignerons, Steve Rhodes and Len Chimel but in 2023 we harvested just enough from Len’s vineyard to produce a single barrel of Eklektikos 2023 and so here we have “Tale of a Vigneron” showcasing our last year working with the historic Steve Rhodes Pinot Noir. The winemaking techniques on this fruit have been through an evolution. In 2019 we de-stemmed to 30% whole-cluster but the fermentation did not undergo its usually long cold soak...instead the yeast took off and the fermentation was only 7 days and hit 95 F. The wine, while beautiful and earthy, was unreproducible. The following vintage of 2022 we transitioned to more whole cluster and more whole berry, only to realize we were losing some fruit extraction and balance in the wine so for 2023 we went back to 30% whole cluster buried under 70% destemmed and crushed fruit.....the result is all this site has to offer....delicate, pretty wine with explosive earthy aromatics and the pallet rocking back and forth between dried fruits and forest floor and cedar notes and delivering crisp, bright mountain acid on the finish, with the fine chalky tannin we’ve come to know as a character of this terroir.
