Launched in 2018, Madson is led by owner and winemaker Cole Thomas, and focuses exclusively on organic vineyard sites in Santa Cruz. Their portfolio is centered around Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with a style that tends toward more extracted wines while maintaining a balance of acidity. Madson's wines aren't driven by trends; despite their relative newness, they exhibit a serious, thoughtful approach. A great example is this Chardonnay, which blends fruit from several vineyard sites (though they also produce single-vineyard wines). The fermentation occurs in barrel, adding complexity and showing the care and attention of the winemaking.
Barrel fermentation is more labor-intensive than using T-bins or stainless steel tanks, which are often favored for their efficiency. But for Cole, it's worth the effort, as it creates a wine with depth and character. The result is a Chardonnay that's far from simple — it's a wine with an oily mouthfeel, a fruit profile of pear and quince jam, and a smoky, nutty nose (from 10% new oak). On the palate, there's a subtle, saline quality and bright acidity. I love it. Drink this now, but also get a bottle to try in two-three years, I think it's going to be a stunner.
