A SEPTEMBER WINE CLUB SELECTION
About the Producer: This wine comes from Mateus Nicolau de Almeida and his wife, Teresa Ameztoy. Mateus bottled his first wine at just ten years old in 1988. He’s the son of João Nicolau de Almeida — one of Portugal’s most celebrated winegrowers — and grandson of Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, who created the legendary Casa Ferreirinha Barca Velha in 1952. Their lineage also connects to the Ramos Pinto Port house, founded in 1880 and still known for its iconic art deco labels by French artist René Vincent.
In 2015, Mateus and Teresa launched their own winery, carved into a hillside of the Douro. I first encountered their wines through Jeff Segal, and later sold them through Selection Massale. The importer once described Mateus as one of the smartest winemakers he’s ever met, with an unmatched understanding of fermentation. [read more here]
