You might have come across what I will term Paris Unc Bars… there’s one across the street from Bistrot Des Tournelles called Le Bubar, and another un-named bar across from Le Baratin. Typically run by some old hippies, mostly as a hang out for their friends, dimly lit and cluttered with personal toys or vinyl collections. There is often some cheese set out with a knife (no plates, serve yourself), and a uniquely curated collection of rhum or scotch or whatever the owner is passionate for - all served neat for bottom dollar (cash preferred). I cannot recommend them enough….
In DC I’ll often find myself at The Green Zone on a Sunday night, for a glass of Arak (in lieu of Ricard) and having shots of obscure rums… while it's no Paris Unc Bar, it scratches that itch for me. (And s/o to Maya who manages to find every random ass bottle I ask for). This rum from Distillerie de Savanna of Réunion Island was the most memorable discovery from the Green Zone this year, so I reached out to their importer to get their bottles in the shop.
Exports here of Réunion Island rum are scarce, and much like their top tier rhum agricole, their molasses based rums possess a profound vegetal/earthiness. Grande Arôme is their high ester (longer fermented), higher proof expression. The profile is bright and tropical, with fresh and overripe pineapple, but also vibrant and green, with mint & coriander, tomatillo and grapefruit, with an ultra saline finish.
The Réunion Island Grand Arôme Rum – Single Origin Edition is a traditional, molasses, unaged high ester grand arôme rhum from the Distillerie de Savanna of Réunion. The edition was distilled on their Savalle copper column still from molasses after a long fermentation, and bottled in New York State at 57.5% ABV.
Tasting notes
Pickled green tomato and black olive aromas followed by subtle flowers. Overripe tropical fruit, saline and herbs on the tongue, with sun dried tomato and candied fruit on the long finish.
