'Potrero' Nebbiolo 2022

Somewhere between Rosato and light Red - This wine represents our second effort with local Nebbiolo. The vineyard is located in the Clements Hills sub AVA in Lodi and trained just like our regular Nebbiolo from Heringer Estates in nearby Clarksburg. This wine is light, if you can believe that, and is very soft on the palate.

- Haarmeyer

Craig Haarmeyer’s wines have been a favorite at the shop for some time, and though he is known for Chenin Blanc his ethereal Nebbiolo is much beloved (especially by Chris). It’s a light-bodied red that's picked early to maintain acidity, fermented whole bunch which is atypical for the grape, and has a very short elevage. All of this results in a wine that feels a bit like Nebbiolo tea – gentle tannins naturally from the grape, but also from the use of stem inclusion and bright acid from picking based on pH, not phenolic ripeness. It’s a clever wine that exhibits Craig’s deep understanding of the Delta climate after decades of living in the area and getting to know its growers in an almost anthropological way.

Craig is a multi-generation Californian who went to the Bay Area for an MFA in painting and then returned home to Sacramento with his wife, Kelley. They raised a family and Craig worked various jobs in the area before spending a bit of time by chance at a winery in his early forties. In 2008, he vinified his first vintage with fruit from a vineyard near the town of Galt, CA.

In a conversation early this year, I sat down with bristly Craig to talk about his least favorite topic, himself. When I asked him why he prices his entry-level wines much lower than winemakers who are sometimes sourced from the exact block of vines, he said that it's because he's all about getting the wines out there and telling the story about the Delta far and wide. As someone who has been around for five-plus decades, he's focused on the much larger goals of leaving a legacy for his children to carry on and telling the story of his beloved Delta land and its farmers. It's not about money.

I’m without a doubt certain that in years to come Craig Haarmeyer’s name will be listed as instrumental in shaping the growth of organic farming, small-production winemaking, and preservation of this area in California.
