Finding information on wines is sometimes difficult, but in this case, Paris Wine Company made it pretty easy (and fascinating). Simon Tardieux makes wine in the Loire Valley in the same sub-region where he was born, the Cher Valley. During his teenage years, Simon worked at Clos Roche Blanche and then spent a few years in social work before returning to winemaking in 2009. He started an internship with Alain Courtault, who had previously been selling the majority of his fruit to co-ops.

Simon eventually became a partner with Alain and helped transition the estate from primarily selling grapes to producing wine. In an interview with Josh Adler, Simon talks about striking the balance between managing an estate and all the other work that goes into pruning, harvest, and maintaining vineyards with a small team.

This specific bottling is Gamay and Cot (Malbec) grown on white clay-slate and clay-limestone soils and sourced from a few different parcels. It undergoes a short maceration and the Gamay is vinified whole cluster, while the Cot is de-stemmed. This wine has beautiful fruit (brambly blackberry) and is simple in the best kind of way. When we think of everyday luxuries, like a perfectly ripe piece of fruit or hot coffee in the morning, the wines of Simon Tardieux — and especially this approachable bottle — come to mind. With this bottle, Simon has achieved the somewhat impossible: an organically farmed, small production wine done by a small team, and priced very affordably. The wine is delicious and a perfect introduction to the region that balances beauty and approachability so wonderfully.
