Once again, another wine built from experimentation…This year we began sourcing fruit from two sites in Southern Colorado: Stark Raven Vineyard in McElmo Canyon which is planted to 4 acres of Viognier, and Riesling from another grower whose vineyard sits just above the upper Dolores River.
Both varieties were de-stemmed and direct pressed in a basket press. The Viognier came in about a week prior and fermentation was started then combined with the Riesling juice when it came in. For the sake of experimentation we also made a white co-ferment of Pinot Noir from Steve Rhodes Vineyard and Pinot Gris from Crane Mesa Vineyard.
The Riesling/Viognier spent 5 months on gross lees in stainless and the Pinot Noir/Pinot Gris spent 5 months on fine lees in neutral oak. In the end we thought both wines were showing well but the Riesling/Viognier was a little too racy and the Pinot Noir/Pinot Gris was lacking some crispness and minerality but when we first test the blend, immediately the aromatics of the two combined told us this was it.
The Riesling/Viognier delivers highly perfumed tropical and petrel notes and tight lingering acidity wrapped in mire lemon and zest of lime and the Pinot Noir/Pinot Gris gives the wine it’s texture and mixes in some earthier aromas and stone fruits with a hint of tannin from the slow press and straw color from the barrel aging.
