This is Wasenhaus’ entry level Pinot Noir; it is the gateway drug of this estate, cut from the same cloth as the top Grand Crus.

Because of the pandemic, we didn’t get a chance to taste the wines neither in barrel nor in bottle, so all the inquiries to, “How are the 2019 Wasenhaus wines?” have been answered in the same manner: “No idea.” To be fair, we had an idea, as the estate has a bit of a track record making kick-ass wines, but you know what I mean. Anyway, as they’ve finally arrived we are cracking them open, to give you some impressions. The 2019 Spätburgunder is finer, more focused, fresher, yet also more dark-fruited than the effusive 2018. All this makes sense given the vintage, yet beyond the cooler tones, there is also, I think, more textural fineness. I think it’s superb, perhaps their best yet – though those of you who like more effusive, warmer wines might prefer the 2018. Both are damn good and silly-rare so drink ’em if you got ’em.

Some technical information: The 2019 was sourced from mainly sandy and loess soils. The Spätburgunder comes from various parcels, it is “Baden Rouge” as you might say. For 2019, one part of the wine was fermented entirely de-stemmed and a part was fermented as 100% whole bunch in a classic open oak vat. Fermentation lasted between 15 to 18 days and the wine was aged in used French oak barrels for 18 months.
